About Sage

Thanks to the wanderlust my upbringing instilled in me, I never feel quite as alive as when I’m experiencing something new, whether it’s a new hiking trail close to home or a new culture halfway around the world. This blog started as a 365 project back in 2012, but has evolved into something more.  I want to continue to improve my photography skills, but I also want a vehicle that helps me share more of my travel experiences.  My blog, my rules.  And with that, my 365 project site has become a site that leverages my budding photography skills to share travel, food, and other experiences.

If you see a photo you like, please feel free to link to the post on my blog or e-mail me at shutterbug.sage@gmail.com.  The photos posted here may be amateur, and have hopefully improved over the years, but they’re my work and shouldn’t be used without permission.

  3. Thanks for following my blog. I am just like you – I love photography but with a family I just never seem to be able to fit photography classes into my life. Plus I live in a rural area, so you have to add on the time of driving to the classes. However, doing this blog (which I never thought I would keep up this long) has really helped me improve my photos, and I have met so many other bloggers who are always willing to help and give advice. I have even had professional photographers make comments about my photos, and that feels really good! It’s like a big family, and I love it. Be prepared for it to take over your life though!! LOL

  4. I came over to see if Shutterbug Sage was a guy or gal. Still don’t know. I’m going to use the generic “he” in my blog post coming up.

By the way, If you really want to advance your skills, do more than 365 pictures a year. I do anywhere from 300-500 per day, anything and everything.

Find a new perspective of your kitchen, your back yard, your plants, your kids. Snap, snap, snap. It’s all digital so there is no development costs. Just time to look at the pictures, figure out which ones you like, and why.

  5. Dear Russel,

I am just now seeing this comment AFTER I saw your blog post and responded that “he” is a “she.” Sorry for my delay!

Thanks for your advice! While I don’t take hundreds of photos every day, I do find myself taking a ridiculous amount more than I would have ever thought when I started my 365 project. In dreary, grey January here Somewhere-in-the-Middle-of-the-USA I was worried I’d never find something to photograph every day. Holy cow! Now I laugh at that thought and find myself posting several posts in one day and coming up with silly titles like “Cleaning Out the Fridge.”

Based upon your advice, I will push myself to take even more shots. I carry my camera with me EVERYWHERE in my purse, so I have no limits or excuses!

As the weather turns cold a few months from now, one of the things I’ll have to force myself to do is get better about indoor shots. Natural lighting makes everything outside a piece of cake in comparison. If you have tips on that, I’m all ears!

  7. Stumbled onto your blog from singhmv’s blog. I too have four kiddos and much like you do not have time for classes and am self taught. I did a 365 last year and learned so much about photography and myself as well 🙂 I decided this year to do a “Snap 52” (at least 1 picture a week) knowing my life with four kiddos is crazy so it was a bit more realistic for me. Anyhow, I love your perspective and your writing! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your year 🙂

      • Awe thanks for lovely comments. I appreciate you looking around and following as well. I am pretty picky on who I follow simply because (and I am sure you know this) my time is so limited 😉 If I follow someone I truly want to be able to read what they have to say and look at what they are working on. I found your pictures beautifully interesting and the fact that we have a lot in common it was a no brainer for me. I have a 5 year old boy, twin 2.5 year old boys and a 14 month old baby girl 🙂 What are the ages of your 4?

      • Oooooh! We have twins in common, too! I have 13-year-old boy/girl twins, a 12-year-old girl, and a five-year-old girl. The “Bigs” as I call the three oldest kiddos usually roll their eyes and won’t let me take pics of them as much as my little Stinkerbell, so you’ll see a LOT more pics of Sofia than the other three. 🙂

  8. keep up the great work shutterbug, I’ve had a look at your photos and you’re doing just fine. for myself I’ve learned photography by studying many books, photography websites and looking at other photographers work. also studying detailed camera manuals that I’ve bought in books stores not the small manuals that came with my many cameras I’ve had over the years was extremely helpful. and practice practice practice, a lot of trials and errors and never get discouraged. manual settings can be very complicated. I’ve found the best way is not to rush it and not get overwhelmed by it. learn one thing at a time until you know it well and then move on to the next setting that needs to be learned, until you can put everything together that you have learned to achieve that certain look to your photo. it will not happen over night. you will develop your own style, and you already are, and comfort with your camera, and that is the most finest and fun part of all.. ; )

I have taken several of thier online courses and have improoved dramatically. this is NOT an advertisement for them!!! All I am staying is that it helped me, and I am now able to go to a full time college for my degree. Everyhting else I have learned is either through youtube, books, or BP. Good luck and THANKS SO MUCH for viiting my blog!

    • Oooooooh, I’m digging the suggestion! My sweetie bought me a two hour class for Mother’s Day, but it was a bit of a disaster. I know he’s looking for an alternative gift, and I’d sure like it to be something related to photography, so I will check them out further. Online, especially if it’s self-paced, would be about the only option I would have working full-time and raising four kids. Thanks so much for the idea!!!

I’m a mediocre photographer, Tho my flowers are nice… but I like water, sculpture and seeing things in my environment that others don’t notice. Like the tiny blue flowers that have bloomed all winter.

So if you’d like company on your quest to photograph the Fountains of KC – let’s talk.
